Eco-life workshop 2, homemade hand cream

Homemade hand cream is good to make from coconut oil. Shea butter also works well. At Örreke, we get our shea butter from Ghana, from the village of Kongo, with the help of the NGO Mondo. You also need some vegetable oil. I had olive oil, grapeseed oil, and almond oil at home.

Be sensible and careful when adding fragrance oil or essential oil. In my workshops, I always remind people that cream is not perfume. Depending on the amount, you should limit yourself to 1-3 drops. You can find specific dosage recommendations in the instructions for the oil, and it’s worth not exceeding them. It’s actually safer to add your favorite perfume instead.

Vitamin E is a source of youthful skin. Vitamin E also helps homemade cream last a bit longer. The easiest way is to buy it from a pharmacy. If you’re making the cream for children or with children, adding vitamin E isn’t necessary.

Of course, we don’t use any artificial preservatives, so it’s recommended to make a small amount that you can use up within a couple of weeks.

Easy recipe for 20 g of cream

  • 10 g of coconut oil or shea butter
  • 10 g of oil
  • 1 drop of fragrance oil or essential oil
  • 1 drop of vitamin E (you can leave it out)

Put room temperature fat and oil in a bowl and mix with a fork until smooth. Now start whisking the mixture, still with the fork. Whisk until the mixture becomes light and doubles in volume. If you wish, you can now add the fragrance oil and vitamin E. Mix gently and the cream is ready. Put into a small jar. Write on the jar what cream it is and the date when it was made.
